Lapis Lazuli crystallises in masses, cubes and dodecahedral crystals. The colour is a deep blue. Lapis is a combination of minerals, primarily lazurite and calcite; pyrite is also contained in the prized massive Afghanistan lapis, while the Chilean lapis usually contains more visible calcite and minimal, if any, pyrite. The dodecahedral crystals generally come from Afghanistan and are quite rare.
The Afghanistan lapis has been likened to the night sky bedecked with stars. It promotes the connection between the physical plane and the celestial kingdom. It represents the forces of initiation into wisdom and the mystical realm.
It is said to have been one of the stones used in the breast plate of the high priest. Lapis was used by the Hebrews to adorn their ceremonial robes. Lapis Lazuli alleviates pain, especially that of migraine headaches. It overcomes depression, benefits the respiratory and nervous systems and the throat, larynx, thyroid, cleanses organs, bone marrow, thymus, and the immune system. Lapis Lazuli overcomes hearing loss, purifies blood, and boosts the immune system. It alleviates insomnia and vertigo, and lowers blood pressure.
